2011 PDX Bicycle Show Spotlight – International Selkirk Loop

International Selkirk Loop

Year Established: 1999

    About the International Selkirk Loop:

The International Selkirk Loop is a National Scenic Byway ideally suited for the cycling enthusiast. This unique route traverses two states and two countries in just 280-miles. The roadways are two lane, relatively rural with light traffic. You'll ride through the extreme NE corner of Washington, the most northern portion of Idaho and into Southeastern British Columbia. The route's communities are spaced at 30-40 mile intervals and follow glacially carved valleys. The route is considered an suitable for an intermediate level rider.

There are additional "Super Side Trips" that are smaller loops that go off of the main route and intersect back onto the main route further up the road. There is an "elevation map" book available on the Selkirk Loop's website.

You may ride this route as a self supported ride, as many do. In fact Adventure Cycling features this route as one of their tours called "Selkirk Splendor".
Go to www.selkirkloop.org and click on the "Activity" tab, then on the road or mountain biking tab. Yes, there are loads of mountain biking trails to ride in the region as well. There are sample itineraries, a cycling map with elevation profiles and links to stories from other riders. Still have questions? Call the toll free number at 888-823-2626 to talk to an expert on the region that can help you plan your next vacation.

Spokane, Washington is only 45-minutes south (by car) from the southern start of the Loop route in Newport, Washington.

New for 2011:

The International Selkirk Loop has partnered with local Rotary Clubs to provide a supported 5-day tour of the Selkirk Loop. The ride is in it's third year and is gaining popularity.

The WaCanId Ride will be held Sept. 20-24, 2011 and is a unique ride in that there will be three start communities. Each start location will only have a maximum of 50 riders so that you'll be assured of riding with a small group. Find out more about this ride by going to www.wacanid.org Registration opens March 1st.

Come visit the International Selkirk Loop booth and pick up a map and brochure of the route. Elevation Map books will be available for purchase.
This is our first time at Pedal Nation, stop by and discover a new area to ride and explore.

2011 PDX Bicycle Show Spotlight – The Bicycle Chiropractor @BicycleChiro

The Bicycle Chiropractor

Year Established: 2010

   Location:

     222 SE 8th Ave
    Portland, OR 97214
    503-236-0013

About The Bicycle Chiropractor:

The Bicycle Chiropractor is a Chiropractic clinic in SE Portland, Oregon dedicated to keeping bicyclists optimally healthy and tuned up for riding their bikes. Our goal is to make Portland, OR the healthiest, safest and most accessible city in the world to bicycle in.

The Bicycle Chiropractor is a proud business member and supporter of the BTA. Fellow members of the BTA benefit from significant discounts at The Bicycle Chiropractor.

Who is The Bicycle Chiropractor? Christopher Pierce, DC is a doctor of Chiropractic who has practiced family Chiropractic care in the Portland metro area since 2001. Christopher loves riding his bike with his family and friends and had decided to make a career of guiding Portlanders toward healthier bicycling. He graduated from New York Chiropractic College (NYCC) in 2001. He performed his Chiropractic clinical internships in Seneca Falls, Syracuse and Buffalo, NY. He performed his externship in SE Portland, Oregon. Dr. Pierce currently serves on the Oregon Board of Chiropractic Examiners (OBCE) rules committee. He has two additional degrees in physical education and also studied exercise physiology, athletic training, and coaching in college. Dr. Pierce is a distinguished fellow of Chiropractic BioPhysics (Clinical Biomechanics of Posture).

Dr. Pierce has been a guest speaker with 90.7 FM KBOO’s The Bike Show, a guest lecturer with the Democratic Party of Oregon’s health care caucus, a guest lecturer with OHSU’s neurology department, and has taught at both Chiropractic and medical universities abroad. He teaches other doctors of Chiropractic adjusting and rehabilitation techniques at continuing education seminars throughout the world. The Bicycle Chiropractor is a proud business member of both the Bicycle Transportation Alliance and the Bicycle Business League.

Dr. Pierce supports and volunteers his time with ThinkFirst of OHSU and Family Adventures in Safe Transportation (FAST). ThinkFirst – Oregon is part of a national non-profit organization working with teachers, educators and community groups to reduce the risk of brain and spinal cord injury through community education and outreach. FAST educated the youth in kindergarten through fifth grade and their parents and guardians. Fast uses a workbook designed for children and their families to use together to learn about pedestrian safety, bicycle safety, and occupant protection. He is available to come speak about the health benefits of bicycling, bike safety, improving bike performance, or provide a mobile clinic for your bike race or event.

Our mission is to make Portland, Oregon the healthiest, safest and most accessible city on the planet to bicycle in. We envision a city that is a pleasure to the senses to commute, study, work and play in, a city that you can ride your bike in like you were in a small town where people were considerate and aware of one another. We want a city where people aren't hesitant to ride their bikes because they are scared of the condition of the roads and attitudes of drivers. We are working toward a healthier daily commute, free from exhaust fumes and harmful gasses. Bicycling is a great way to stay healthy at any age. We want to help people of all ages feel like kids again by riding their bikes safely.

The Bicycle Chiropractor’s philosophy is that affordable health care should be available to everyone in Portland, Oregon. That is why we have done out part in eliminating the barriers to receiving Chiropractic health care. We have created simple pricing. Non-insurance billing fees offer a time of service discount: $60 adjustments and $60 exams. We use Oregon's Worker's Compensation fees for health insurance billing and personal injury billing. BTA members are offered additional time of service discounts.

We offer an opportunity better than sliding scale fees. Should an individual need a hand up, we will trade Chiropractic care (an exam and/or adjustment) for 3 hours of volunteer time helping to create healthier, safer and more accessible bicycling in Portland, Oregon. Volunteer opportunities include writing letters and emails to editors, bloggers and politicians, helping with website projects or volunteering at local Chiropractic or bicycling events, what ever suits you best. My primary goal is to have a city full of healthy bicyclists at any cost.

The Bicycle Chiropractor clinic has room for up to 3 client's bicycles mounted on CycleOps and Ascent bicycle trainers facing a big screen LCD TV and stereo surround sound. We play Portland bicycle activity slide shows or professional bike races from the perspective of bicycle mounted cameras. You can race along with professional riders on the TV or leisurely pedal on your bike, whatever your usual riding style is. We begin your Chiropractic exam with you riding your bike. This allows Dr. Pierce to accurately evaluate your riding posture and biomechanics. Dr. Pierce will use his many years of experience in detecting and correcting abnormal spinal and extremity movement patterns to help you ride with improved symmetry and greater efficiency. Adjustments to your bicycle and to your body position are made to help improve your overall level of performance and comfort. After your biomechanical bike riding analysis, Dr. Pierce performs more traditional Chiropractic evaluations and treatments on the Chiropractic table. This literal hands-on approach to cycling performance is unique in the world of cycling. Dr. Pierce takes digital before and after pictures and video to show you the improvements in your cycling.

New for 2011:

The first 3,000 visitors to pick up a Portland Bicycle Show bag will find in it a card from The Bicycle Chiropractor offering a free Chiropractic exam and bike riding evaluation ($60 value).

Other things you should know about Bike Cozy:

Currently a one-woman operation
Wholesale inquiries: Wholesale @BikeCozy.com

It took me three hours the first time I changed both tires/tubes on my first bicycle in Portland, an old Motobecane names Atlas. My first winter in Portland (2006) I rode without fenders and had a constant mud splash up by back. Other things I learned that winter included: steel wheels in pdx winter could be considered a death trap, the pocket bicycle map put out by the city is worth its weight in gold, following someone who also just moved to the city, at night, in the lloyd, in the rain leaves a very high chance you'll end up wiping out due to the trolley tracks.

2011 PDX Bicycle Show Spotlight – Unusual Tours

Unusual Tours

Year Established: 2006

About Unusual Tours:

Unusual Tours specializes in creating custom bicycle tours for small groups. Their logistics and support services allows groups of 6 to 22 riders to create their own full support tour without having to deal with all of the planning, logistics, and gear requirements. This allows you, as the tour organizer, to choose your own route and set your own pace. You also have the freedom to mix local events and activities in with your ride. The organizer is in charge of the invitations so you can ensure that you have a compatible group of riders for your tour.

Unusual Tours provides full SAG support during your ride. A 2 man crew with a fully equipped SAG wagon is there to take care of any mechanical or first aid needs. Sports drinks, water, and snacks are provided to keep you fueled up during your ride. And when it is time for lunch they pull out the tables and chairs and a nice spread of food for your enjoyment. 2011 PDX Bicycle Show Spotlight – English Cycles

English Cycles

Year Established: 2008

About English Cycles:

Rob built his first bike at age 15. It was terrible, but he learned a lot. Then he started racing mountain bikes, and thinking about component design, culminating in heading off to University to study mechanical engineering. Cambridge (UK) isn't known for it's mountains, so he took up road racing and time trialling, as well as continuing to use the bicycle as his sole means of transport. Some years of travel (trying to avoid winter!) followed graduation, riding his bike across the US, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. There was some racing thrown in with the touring too, with wins in most of those countries, in events ranging from 12 hour mountain bike races to road hillclimbs. He also helped design, build and then pilot a human powered vehicle to British records in both the 200m sprint and the hour.

Eventually Rob landed in Eugene, Oregon, ready to find a home and finally get his own workshop set up. Working at folding bicycle company Bike Friday as the engineer and production manager kept his skills honed whilst English Cycles gradually came into being. The first bike was a special time trial machine for himself, built because he couldn't get the fit he wanted on anything off the shelf. It worked out well, twice winning the Oregon State TT Championships. Soon after that friends began to ask him to build frames for them, and word spread from there.

Rob's designs are first and foremost about function. His family and business are proudly car free, and so he understands the needs of the everyday cyclist as well as of the out and out racer. But functionality doesn’t mean that it can’t look good too! Rob builds with steel, believing that although it may have been overshadowed by carbon in recent years, with the current alloys and tubesets it has a lot to offer. And steel can be light too: Rob’s personal race bike weighs 11.5lbs.

English Cycles is a one-man show, focusing on personal attention and service. The process involves many questions to really understand the needs, wants and desires of the customer, who is very much included in turning that information into a custom design that will fit perfectly and fully serve it’s intended purpose.

New for 2011:

English Cycles will be showing the custom belt drive single speed 29er mountain bike!

 –Rob English, English Cycles–

From Pedal Nation-
We're very excited to welcome Rob English of English Cycles to the 2011 PDX Bicycle Show.  Many of you may have seen Rob's amazing work at the OR Handmade Bicycle Show's. He builds beautiful handcrafted bikes with purpose.  My favorite English Cycle is one of Rob's commuter bikes – aka. The Special Winter Bike (with belt drive – see Rob's website for pics). It's the perfect bike for the everyday Oregon commuter!!  I look forward to seeing what Rob has share in the Oregon Framebuilders display area in April 2011!

2011 PDX Bicycle Show Spotlight – Gracie’s Wrench @gracieswrench

Gracie's Wrench

Year Established: 2004

About Gracie's Wrench:

Six years ago, Gracie's Wrench was created from a mutual love of bicycles and sharing. When founder Tori Bortman was learning to become a mechanic it was nearly impossible to find folks who were not only willing but able to teach her the ropes. Dissatisfied, she vowed that once she had learned it would be her job to make bicycles and repairing them accessible and empower people to better understand their bike.

Since then Gracie's Wrench has become the premier educational service for bicycles and repairs. Services include intimate, two-person Tune-up and Repair Courses where students complete all the work on their own bicycles, everyday riding consults for those who are just making their first foray into cycling and need some extra guidance, workshops and educational programs for businesses that want to encourage their employees to commute by bike and much more.

With 13 years experience as a teacher and bicycle mechanic, Tori Bortman understands that everyone learns differently, so all workshops and classes are specially designed around your goals. Gracie's Wrench is proud that no other cycling program offers that level of service. In fact, most others don't even expect you to be able to perform the topic of the class when you leave. Gracie's Wrench doesn't just expect you to understand more, they want you to actually take your bike in your own hands– whether you're riding, wrenching, commuting or racing.

New for 2011:

Tori Bortman of Gracie's Wrench will be offering workshops on basic maintenance and flat repair throughout the weekend. Come by and learn tricks and tips to keep your ride smooth and see the life changing "gorilla grip." Stop by her booth for a special Pedal Nation offer and learn why the pokey tool is one you can't live without.

 Tori Bortman, Gracie's Wrench

From Pedal Nation-
We're very pleased to welcome Tori back to the 2011 PDX Bicycle Show.  Last year, her workshops were a huge success and I am sure she will once again draw a large crowd to hear her teach.  Tori will be teaching workshops on both Saturday and Sunday of the show.  Stop in either day for a workshop or drop by the Gracie's Wrench booth during the show.
